❤️ WHY WE LOVE IT
First, Salisbury steak isn’t steak at all. It’s prepared using ground beef, delicious spices for flavoring and is served over egg noodles or mashed potatoes. It’s an old-fashioned recipe that was very popular in the 1950s. Many confuse this dish with Hamburger steak, but they are different. Hamburger steak has fewer seasonings, whereas Salisbury steak has a more robust flavor. We also make ours with Saltine crackers instead of bread crumbs. Southerners love their Saltine crackers, and they add a wonderful texture to the Salisbury steaks. This is a comfort food dish you’ll want to make over and over, and it comes together in just 30 minutes.
🍴 KEY INGREDIENTS
- Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup-you will use it undiluted, and it will be included in the steaks and the gravy.
- Dijon mustard, Worcestershire Sauce, and Horseradish-these delicious ingredients help make a wonderful flavor.
- Crushed Saltine Crackers and an egg-helps with texture and binding the ground beef together to make the steaks.
- Chopped Onion-great flavor
- Ground beef– We use a 90/10 mix when making this recipe.
🥣 HOW TO MAKE IT
Once you make it, you won’t believe how easy it is. You’ll want to add this old-fashioned recipe to your weekly rotation.
Preparations
Before getting started, go ahead and crush your Saltine crackers and chop your onion.
Cooking
Step 1: Combine mushroom soup, dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and horseradish in a small bowl and mix well. Set aside.
Step 2: In another bowl, lightly beat egg, add saltine crackers, chopped onion, salt and pepper, and 1/4th cup of the soup mixture.
Step 3: Next, add ground beef and mix well with hands. Shape into patties. This made 8 patties.
Step 4: Brown patties in a large skillet with cooking oil and drain off fat if needed.
Step 5: Add 3/4 cup of water to the remaining soup mixture and pour over the patties. Cover the pan and cook for about 15 more minutes. Serve over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice.
⭐TIP
You can easily add fresh mushrooms to this gravy. After you brown the patties and remove them from the pan, toss in the mushrooms and cook them down for 2-3 minutes before adding the soup. As mushrooms cook, they release a lot of water, so you may not have to add the 3/4 cup of water to the soup to make the gravy.
RECIPE VARIATIONS
- You could easily use ground turkey or even ground pork in this recipe. Ground pork can hold a bit more fat, so be sure to drain off the grease before making the gravy.
- Different spices can deepen the flavor. Add a teaspoon of liquid smoke to add a smokey flavor. You can also add a couple of shakes of Montreal steak seasoning.
WHAT TO SERVE IT WITH
This old-fashioned dish is wonderful with creamy mashed potatoes or ranch macaroni and cheese. Add our Mississippi Mud cake for dessert!
❓FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Of course! If you don’t like onions, leave them out. You can also make them to the gravy instead of in the steak patties. Just add them to the pan and saute them a bit before adding the soup to make the gravy.
STORING AND REHEATING
To store, place in an air tight container in the refrigerator. It will keep for 2-3 days. To freeze leftovers, place in a freezer safe container and keep in the freezer up to 2 months. To reheat, let it thaw out and then warm on top of the stove.
